Access Care Instructions

After Surgery:

    1. Keep your access arm elevated on pillow to decrease swelling.

    2. After the first few days, use your arm to prevent stiff joints.

    3. If you have a fistula; you will be instructed to begin exercises for your access 2 weeks after surgery.

Please check your access EVERYDAY!

    1. NEVER lay with your access arm bent under your head.

    2. DO NOT carry a purse or pocketbook on your access arm.

    3. DO NOT lift heavy packages with your access arm.

    4. NEVER allow blood pressure to be taken with your access arm; unless your doctor says it is okay.

    5. NEVER allow blood to be drawn from your access arm.

IF YOUR ACCESS BEGINS BLEEDING, APPLY PRESSURE WITH GAUZE. IF BLEEDING DOES NOT STOP OR IS UNCONTROLLED; CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY. IF YOUR ACCESS STOPS WORKING CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY.
