Looking After Your Access

If you have a fistula that means that between dialysis sessions you will have no tubes or needles in your arm. Your fistula however is your lifeline to the dialysis machine and a few simple rules need to be followed to ensure that it remains in good condition.

    • Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing or a wristwatch on your fistula arm.

    • Carry out a daily check to see that it is working.

    • Never allow anyone to measure your blood pressure on your fistula arm.

    • Never allow anyone to take a blood sample from your fistula arm (except through the dialysis needles during treatment.)

    • Cover and protect your arm during excercise or vigorous activity such as gardening or work.

If you have a subclavian catheter:

      • Take care not to let the tube or site become wet in the bath

      • Ensure that it is not pulled or tugged at by your clothes

      • Inform your nurse or doctor if it causes you any pain or discomfort
